Budi Pekerti education according to the thought of Ki Hadjar Dewantara as an effort to prepare young citizens

Abstract

Globalization has a considerable impact on the social development of children, where the boundless world appears. The world is like a big village, and we will be very easily to get many information. Children will get diverse information through easily accessible media. Children need readiness as a foundation in dealing with. Schools as a formal educational institutions have an obligation to provide character education. Character education has a role as foundation for a child to become a citizen. Students need knowledge of citizenship and civic society, includes developing values, skills, and knowledge. Therefore we expect students to become a competent, confident, and committed citizen to devote himself to his country. Long time ago, Ki Hadjar Dewantara proposed a concept of Budi Pekerti education to prepare children as citizens. As a teacher in his time, Ki Hadjar Dewantara had experience in educating children in the school he founded, named Perguruan Tamansiswa. Budi Pekerti education must include the nation spirit for instance by giving examples, repeating of good habits, doing actions, and experiences physical psyche. Among system is learning method they used. They called ing ngarsa sung tuladha, ing madya mangun karsa, and tut wuri handayani. This literacy research aims to meaning of Ki Hadjar Dewantaras thoughts about Budi Pekerti education as an effort to prepare young citizens. The results of this study are the goal, learning methods, and learning media in the implementation of character education according to the thought of Ki Hadjar Dewantara as an effort to prepare Tamansiswa’s students as young citizens.
